AC has a bad smell

- Mould or bacteria on a damp cooling coil
- Dirty filters holding old dust
- Stale water sitting in a clogged drain
- Cooking or smoke smells absorbed over time
Safe checks you can try
- Clean and fully dry the air filters
- Run the AC on Fan mode for 10-15 minutes to dry the coil
- Check the drain is not holding stale water
- A deep coil clean or anti-bacterial service clears strong musty smells
A burning or plastic smell is different: switch off immediately and get it checked, it can be electrical.
